do you ever get in those moods where you don’t feel like reading and you don’t feel like being on the internet and you don’t feel like watching a show and you don’t feel like sleeping and you don’t feel like existing in general

A conversation between Zack Galifianakis’s character Ben and his therapist, from the movie Are You Here

It got low ratings probably because it was too out there for most, but I really liked it.

Therapist: “It says here that you’ve never considered medication?”

Galifianakis: “Antidepressants? They have been suggested, as they have been to most of America.”

Therapist: Well I was thinking more like a mood stabilizer, which for most works as a therapeutic solution.

Galifianakis: “No need to resist the magic of lithium, I know. We should sprinkle its salty goodness over the fries at McDonalds, until we’re “Dawn of the Dead” drooling towards Banana Republic, pushing our carts dazed for days through the market throwing meat in, black blood pooling under so much plastic.”

Therapist: “That’s an interesting image.”

Galifianakis: “Which I wouldn’t have if I was zonked on that shit, I wouldn’t feel this hum I’ve got going. Clear, sharp, and purposeful, like every ion in my body is vibrating with genius.”

Therapist: “Marijuana is a chemical.”

Galifianakis: “It’s green and from the Earth.”

Therapist: “But it’s a drug, a way of dealing with your symptoms.”

Galifianakis: “Like the drug you get when you into a restaurant, or come home after work, or offer a stranger the moment they come into your house.
Our whole social system is built around some drug. Most cultures made beer before they had an alphabet.

… There are times that are wonderful, and there are times that are horrible, and the wonderful thing is right now, I feel alive.

There’s too much “I need him, he completes me” and not enough “I complete me yet I want them along for this journey”
